Archos's latest product announcement is huge--literally. The MP3 and portable video player (PVP) innovator has disclosed details on its latest gadget, the AV700 Mobile Digital Video Recorder (DVR). The unusually large device features a gigantic wide-screen 7-inch color display and either 40GB or 100GB of storage. The AV700, available in June, screens movies, displays photos, and of course, plays back MP3 and protected WMA files. And while it's nowhere near pocket-size, it sure makes a sweet mobile companion, even if it's the biggest portable MP3 player we've ever used. Perhaps the most compelling part of the AV700 equation is that it can be scheduled to record video from TV, cable, satellite, and even DVDs.
Upside: Displaying 480x234 pixels and 262,000 hues, the spacious screen may not be as bright and colorful as the Sony PSP's, but it beats the daylights out of the typical 4-inch-and-less PVP crowd, and it makes for excellent group viewing. Like its predecessors--namely, the AV400--this beast can play back all sorts of video files, including MPEG-4, DivX, AVI, and protected WMV. The 100GB version can also record up to 400 hours of MPEG-4 video, and with the built-in Scheduler utility, users can automatically set the AV700 months in advance to record programs. The TV docking pod is a small, easily manageable device that attaches to the AV700, and it features inputs and outputs for recording or viewing content on a TV.
Conveniently, the AV700 can autosync with Windows Media Player 10.0 and is compatible with protected content from the likes of Napster, MSN Music, and CinemaNow. The AV700 is also compatible with to-go subscriptions services--imagine filling it up with 100GB of tracks from Rhapsody To Go. The unit can store up to a million JPEG photos, display them in slide shows, and act as a USB host for transferring pictures from digital cameras. Built-in stereo speakers, a removable battery, and an integrated kickstand are also welcome touches. Designed to compete with portable DVD players, the AV700 may be trickier to use, but it's more definitely more versatile. But perhaps one of the more appealing aspects of the AV700, as well as other Archos PVPs, is that it is Macrovision compliant so that you can record content from copy-protected DVDs.
Downside: At 480x234 pixels, its resolution is lower than we'd expect from a unit of this size. It may be smaller than most laptops, but the Archos AV700 is a monster nonetheless at 8.2 by 4.2 by 0.8 inches and 20.1 ounces. Still, it's relatively thin; the demo unit we handled almost felt like it could be snapped in half. But it's stowable, and it has a certain sci-fi appeal. The AV700 is a major investment at $600 and $800 for the 40GB and 100GB versions, respectively. Given the proper audience--such as a techie family that travels a lot--it looks to be worth the megabucks. It's easy to use for a device that does so much, but the battery life of five hours for video could dampen vacation plans, so you might want to pick up an extra battery from Archos.
Outlook: The size and quality of the screen are critical factors when it comes to PVPs, and the Archos AV700 delivers in those respects. The icon-driven Archos interface is a proven commodity, and the player's ability to record audio and video content makes it a natural choice for media file maniacs. Its size may turn many consumers off, but it will also attract others. Whatever the case, Archos hasn't skipped a beat with its latest eye-popping innovation.
